April 25: Speech Therapy

Nathan had his first appointment with a speech therapist at UCSF. She gave him a children’s book with various pictures and tried to make him say or babble anything just to see how the sound he makes comes out of his mouth. She asked us if he knows any words so far. I told her nothing yet. So far, he would pronounce everything with ‘m’ or ‘n’. If he says ‘banana’, he will say ‘ma ma’ or ‘na na’. If he says ‘cat’, he will say ‘ma ma’ or ‘na na’. Nelson and I tried to have him say ‘hi’, ‘bye’ and other words. But he couldn’t pronounce the letter ‘h’ or ‘b’ yet. Most of the time when we try to teach him how to say certain words, he would look at us funny and just laughs. He thinks we are playing with him. 🙂 However, I do recall hearing him say ‘Hi’ twice. The speech therapist would like us to meet with her in 3 months to see how he progresses.

She did tell us that there are other speech therapist in our area. Since he is still young and only had cleft palate surgery two months ago, she feels that we should give him more time to adjust and learn new things on his own (of course with our help) instead of putting him into a regular speech program. Once we feel he is old enough to enter a regular speech program, there are two ways we can do this. One way is to send him to some regional office that is free. But she feels that he may not qualify for this free program. She said why but for some reason I can’t remember. Then of course there is a speech program that is insurance approved (which means something we will have to pay for ourselves).

After speaking with the speech therapist, we met with other doctors who looked at Nathan’s palate just to see how well it is healing. So my husband sat on the patient chair holding Nathan and there were about 5… yes FIVE… doctors looking at Nathan’s palate. One doctor said that he palate is looking great but it seems short from back to front. I told the doctor that some food still goes up my son’s nose especially those pureed food kinds. I felt that the doctor didn’t believe me. I told him that I took pictures of it and asked him if he wanted to see it. But he never said responded to my question. So the doctor started to talk about something else that was not important for me to hear. After listening to other things I wasn’t interested in hearing from him, I told him AGAIN that my son still sneezes food out from his right nostril. I asked whether if this will be damaging to his nose or will his front palate close at all! I told the doctor that the front palate close to this top teeth appears to be open still and that is how the food gets into his nose. I specifically told him where I believe the food is going because earlier the doctor told me that his palate is closed.

After seeing the doctors, some guy with a camera told us he wants to take Nathan’s pictures. So the guy with camera tried to take Nathan’s pictures but couldn’t because he had the camera cover on! DUH! After he removed the cover, he took pictures of Nathan’s front face and left, right side. Afterwards, he took a family picture of three of us. Until today, I still have no idea why this guy took pictures of us. Then he handed Nathan a kids toothbrush. Earlier, I noticed that he took pictures of other families too who had appointments that day.

Nathan may not know how to say some words right now but he knows his eyes, hands, feet, ears, hair, tummy, pants, socks, etc. When he is sitting on my lap, he would get my attention and point down meaning he wants to get down. Also, he would grab my hand and point to me what he wants or where he wants to go. Just now, Nelson showed his son how to ‘spank’ his mommy! So Nathan actually spanked me. I said ‘hey! what you doing?’ :-0

April 10: TRON weekend

Since it was my nieces’ spring break, I took a day off from work so I can take them to SF. We did some shopping and had lunch at Cheesecake Factory. My son stayed with my husband. In the late afternoon, my husband picked us up as well as Jeffrey who met us downtown after his school. Since TRON came out on dvd/blu ray this past week, we watched the movie at our house. I even made popcorn. Since our son is too young, I put him to bed first before we watched the movie.

Next day, we went out to eat lunch at some new bar and grill restaurant near the Fairfield mall.

Afterwards, we walked around the mall for a bit then went back to our house. At home, my nieces blew bubbles for Nathan in our backyard.

My niece Jewel took this picture using her new laptop while I was busy in the kitchen making red velvet cupcakes (for my sister-in-law’s bday), chicken pasta and chocolate chip cookies from scratch. After remodeling our kitchen, I have been baking and cooking a lot more.

April 5: BAAS newsletter

From time to time, our adoption agency sends us a newsletter which contains stories about families and their adopted children, provides a list of resources such as adoption books, adoption groups, etc. My favorite section of the newsletter is the New Arrivals section. This section lists the families that currently came home with their adopted children. After 3 years of waiting for a child, we finally made into the list.

Currently, we are in the process of doing a post-adoption which is filing our son’s adoption paperwork here in US. Once the government office takes care of our paperwork, they will give us a court date. I am not sure what to expect on that court date other than show up for court.

April 3: Future high school

We decided to take Nathan for a walk at the new high school near our home. This will be our son’s future high school. They have about 2 or 3 baseball fields, tennis courts, basketball court, swimming pool, soccer field and a big football field. The kids who currently attend this school are pretty spoiled.

April 2: Time at Pixar

My husband and I decided to have dim sum with my husband’s family.

After dim sum, we all decided to go to my husband’s workplace Pixar. Since Pixar is going through major changes, my husband showed his familly around to see some of the new changes.

March 23: At grandparents place

Now that we have a baby, I decided to work part-time so I can be a mom to my son while my husband goes to work. I go to the office once a week and work from home most of the time. My mom babysat my son for a while when I go to the office. Since she has been busy lately, we have been taking my son to my husband’s parent’s house. My husband’s workplace Pixar have their own daycare. But if I can take care of my own baby or another family member can, there is no need to spend $$$ for a daycare. My in-laws also take care of their 1 yr old granddaughter. When my son is at his grandparents’ house, he has a playmate.

My father-in-law sent me these pictures of my son and his cousin Selena.

March 12: Disneyland!

On our way to Disneyland, he was very awake and kept himself busy.

After a few hours later, he finally got tired and fell asleep.

We were in Disneyland for few days. Most of our time in Disneyland, our son behaved pretty well. He didn’t complain or cry while we were in line. At times, he actually fell asleep while we stood in line then woke up once we got on a ride. He favorite ride was Dumbo. He kept smiling, screaming for joy and clapping his hands especially when he saw Dumbo go up.

We got him a 1st Visit button. Even though he has been to Hong Kong Disney, it was his first time visiting Disneyland in USA.

Hong Kong Disney doesn’t sell Mickey Mouse ears for some reason. So we got our son Mickey Mouse ears in Anaheim Disneyland.

‘Look how cute I look with my Mickey Mouse ears!’

Sharing a moment of laughter with my daddy.

‘Playing around near the Winnie the Pooh ride with my cousin Selena.’

‘Want me to show how you grab a cookie puff out from my snack cup and eat it?’

‘Put your hand on top of the open slit lid just like this…’

‘Push you hand through the open lid…’

‘Take one cookie puff out using your fingers …’

‘Put the cookie puff into your mouth…’

‘See the cookie puff inside my mouth?’

‘Eat it then show a nice grin’

Bathroom Breaks
I never had to wait for a diaper changing station inside Disneyland restroom before. Before, I only had to stand in one line to go to the bathroom. Now, I have to stand in two lines: diaper changing station and usual line to use the women’s restroom. Since the line for women’s restroom is usually longer than men’s restroom, I thought it would be better for my husband to change our son’s diaper himself at the men’s restroom. To my surprise, my husband told me that he also had to wait for a diaper changing station inside the men’s restroom as well!

World of Color
World of Color is a new water attraction at Disney California Adventure park. Disney/Pixar employees had a preview day to see Water of Color before it became available to the public back in summer of 2010 but we were out of town during that time. So finally we were able to see it. In order to get a best view of the show, my husband made reservations at the Wine Country Trattoria. If you dine there, you will get some special ticket that allows you to view the World of Color show at a better location in the park. I thought the show was fantastic. However, it did remind of me the Bellagio water show in Las Vegas. At the end of the show, World of Color showed Tron. I think that was the best part of the show because it lit up some of the rides in the park to make it look like you were in Tron city or something. It was pretty cool.

elecTRONica
electTRONica is something new at California Adventure park. They put on a short dance performance as an introduction to elecTRONica and do a countdown before elecTRONica begins. After the countdown, an area of California Adventure becomes into a clubbing place where they have dance floors set up and alcohol stands. I bought myself a Digitini (a martini) which comes with a lighted martini plastic glass. There was even a Flynn arcade room where it contains vintage arcade games. Since the music was too loud for our son, we didn’t stay there long. We only hung out there long enough to ride Monsters Inc., watch the TRON 3-D show and drink my Digitini. The TRON 3-D show was kinda lame because it was only a preview or advertisement of their upcoming TRON on blu ray.

California Adventure park is having a major make-over. Lots of areas where closed because they are currently working on the new Cars ride for 2012 and Ariel’s ride which will be in June 2011.

Since we have a baby now, it is no longer easy just to go on bigger rides. But since my husband’s sister and her family was with us, we took turns looking after our kids while the adults went on Space Mountain or Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. We were able to bring the kids with us to Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion though. My son was very brave at the Haunted Mansion. He was looking around everywhere. He is a very curious boy.

March 3: Nathan’s new phone

Nathan just loves cell phones for some reason. Whenever he sees us talking on the phone, he wants to do the same using my old, broken cell phone.

It’s funny watching him talk on my old cell phone. It is funny especially when he doesn’t hold the phone correctly. At times, he holds the phone above his ears!

My husband was on the phone talking to his parents. So Nathan thought it was a good idea to talk on the phone too.

Mom, can I talk in private?

Lets see… who can I call next?

Feb 26: Build a Bear

Since I got a Build a Bear coupon for a free stuffed animal, we took Nathan at the Build a Bear Workshop at the Fairfield mall. It was his first visit at the store. There were a lot of toy animals to choose from. Since he has plenty of stuffed animal bears at home, we chose a dog for him. He got very curious when the lady was stuffing his animal toy. Since he is still small, I had to be the one to step on the peddle to start the stuffing process. After his toy was stuffed, we created a birth certificate for his new toy. We named his dog Zufan since that is the name that was given to him at his orphanage.

Once he got home, he got really excited to get his new toy out of the box.

Nathan and his new stuffed toy

At first, I thought he would hug his toy or carry it everywhere like what he does with his other stuffed animals. Instead, he kept wrestling with it!

Oh no! Nathan is doing a piledriver move on his dog!

It kinda looks like his dog is telling me ‘Please help me!’

1-2-3, Nathan wins!

Feb 21: Out with grandma and cousins

Since it is a holiday today, I went out with my mom, nieces and nephew for lunch. We ate at Johnny Carinos. I thought the food was just OK. I probably won’t be going back there in a long time.

Nathan was obedient today at the restaurant. He kept himself occupied with his crayon while we ate. Also, my nieces and nephew were there to keep him company.
